MOBILE TEA HOUSE - TRAVEL THROUGH SUBURBS OF EUROPE

A CUDI project. 2002

The travel was based on The Mobile tea- house, a project that CUDI implemented in
collaboration with a group of inhabitants from Vollsmose – summer 2001.

Together with a group of women from Vollsmose we traveled to Berlin (BRD), Marseille
(F) and Turin (IT). On our way we stayed in suburbs with a structure similar to Vollsmose.
Areas that were all built as modernistic utopias; areas that today are stigmatized as low
status ghettoes.

Through dialogue and interviews with people that we met we examined the conditions in
these areas. We accumulated knowledge and decoded questions concerning housing
situation, social marginalization, identity and alienation.

All events, interviews, talks, meetings were documented through video-recordings,
sound-recordings, photos and text.
This material was accumulated in the mobile teahouse, which then also became a
“knowledge-base” and library. A mobile information and dialogue space about urbanity,
social, political and cultural conditions.

The project stemmed from an interest in how a given architectural structure influence
on human behavior. It is an analysis of how environments are shaped by conventional
conditions. Conditions that not necessarily are visible in our everyday life but that exist
as spatial codes and that is perceived differently dependent on cultural, social, religious
and physical background.
